This WordPress theme detector tells you. Enter a website address, and it reads the theme straight from the page, then gives you an honest read on whether that theme is an off-the-shelf template or a genuinely bespoke build.

It'll tell you what's running a site, whether that theme is one of a kind or off the shelf, and where it can't be sure. We won't dress that last part up.

How the theme detector works

It's simpler than it sounds.

When you enter a website, we fetch its public homepage, exactly as your browser would, and read the code that every WordPress site leaves on show. WordPress keeps its themes in a predictable place and links to the active theme's stylesheet on nearly every page.

We find that stylesheet, read the details WordPress stores at the top of it, and hand them back to you.

That's the whole trick. We only look at what's already public. We don't log in, and we don't keep a record of the sites you check.

What the theme detector tells you

For any WordPress site, it pulls out four things:

• Whether the site runs WordPress at all, so you're not left guessing.
• The active theme, with its name, author and version wherever the site makes them available.
• Whether it's a child theme, and the parent theme it's built on.
• A template-or-bespoke verdict, our best read on whether that theme is a product sold to thousands of sites or a one-off build.

If the site isn't running WordPress, it tells you that too, rather than inventing an answer.

Template or bespoke: why it actually matters

This is the part most people care about, and for good reason.

An off-the-shelf theme ships to everyone who buys it, not just you. It has to work for everyone, so it comes loaded with options, styles and features you'll never touch, and all of that spare weight comes along for the ride. WordPress powers more than 40% of the web, and a huge slice of those sites lean on the same handful of popular themes, so "one of a kind" is rarely the phrase for them.

A bespoke theme is the opposite. It's built for one business, with only the code that business needs. Nothing extra dragging it down, nothing generic making it look like everyone else.

That gap shows up where it counts: speed, security and how much your site looks like your brand instead of a template three of your competitors are also using. Why so many sites run the same few themes

There's no shame in a template. They're quick to launch and cheap to start with, which is exactly why they're everywhere.

The catch is that a template can only take you so far. As a business grows, the very thing that made the theme easy at the start, all those built-in options, becomes the thing holding it back. You end up bending your business to fit the theme, instead of the other way round.

What a theme detector cannot tell you

We believe in being straight with you, so here are the limits.

A heavily customised theme can look nothing like the original, even when the tool correctly names it. A developer can also rename theme folders or strip out the usual details, which leaves the tool unsure. And some sites sit behind security services that block automated checks entirely.

So treat the result as a strong, honest read rather than a cast-iron guarantee. For most sites it's spot on. For the tricky few, it'll tell you it isn't certain rather than guess.
