Most of what a WordPress site can do comes from plugins. Contact forms, online shops, sliders, pop-ups, SEO tools, they're nearly all plugins bolted on top.

This WordPress plugin detector reads the ones a site loads on its pages and lists them for you in seconds, grouped by what they do. No login. Nothing installed. Nothing stored.

How the plugin detector works

Every time a plugin adds something to a page, it usually loads a little of its own code to make it work, and that code sits in a predictable, public place.

We fetch the site's homepage, exactly as your browser would, spot those plugin files, and match them against a library of well-known plugins so you get friendly names instead of raw folder names. Where a plugin gives away its version, we show that too.

Same as with our theme checker, we only read what a site already shows the public. We don't sign in, and we don't store what you look up.

What the plugin detector tells you

For a WordPress site, you get:

• Whether the site runs WordPress, before anything else.
• The plugins it loads on the front end, named wherever we recognise them.
• Their versions, wherever the site exposes them.
• A tidy breakdown by category, so the SEO tools, the eCommerce tools, the page builders and the rest are grouped at a glance, with a running count.

Why the plugins a site runs matter

Plugins are brilliant, and they're also the single biggest reason WordPress sites get slow and get hacked. Both things are true at once.

Every plugin is one more file for the browser to load, one more set of database queries, and one more thing that can quietly break. Stack up thirty of them and a site that flew on day one starts to crawl. That costs you visitors, and it costs you rankings, because page speed is something Google actively measures.

Security is the bigger worry. Most WordPress break-ins start with a single plugin someone forgot to update. According to Patchstack's vulnerability database, plugins account for around 91% of all recorded WordPress security vulnerabilities, next to just 8% in themes and 1% in the core software itself.

So a long plugin list isn't a badge of honour. Often it's a warning sign.

Why fewer plugins is usually better

None of this means plugins are bad. It means every single one should earn its place.

The trouble with the bolt-on approach is that every new feature gets solved by adding yet another plugin, and the pile grows until nobody's quite sure what half of them still do. Each one is a fresh thing to patch, a fresh thing that can break, and a fresh way in for anyone poking at your site.

What the plugin detector cannot see

A quick bit of honesty about the limits.

The tool can only spot plugins that load something on the public page. Plenty of plugins do their work quietly in the background, on the admin side or the server, and those stay invisible to a scan like this. A site can also rename or bundle its plugin files, which hides them.

So think of the result as the plugins a site shows to the world, not a full inventory of everything installed. It's a genuinely useful snapshot, with honest edges.
